At the beginning of the sixties, in the Heredia Province, private profits were the only companies dedicated to the coffee business. His goal, like all traditional private institutions, was to maximize his profits. Faced with this reality, small coffee farmers, without technical assistance, with serious difficulties in caring for their farms, due to lack of financing and, in case of obtaining it, with suffocating interests, began to lose their plots and suffer impoverishment that compromised their condition. social and directly affected their quality of life.
There was an urgent need to find a solution. It was necessary to free oneself from a system that was holding back the economic, social and cultural development of small coffee producers and concentrating wealth, in very few hands, widening a very dangerous social gap.
The National Bank of Costa Rica, aware of this difficult situation, established the Cooperatives Department, whose objective was to promote the creation of these founded organizations, in solidarity, joint effort and in a philosophy of service and not profit.
A group of coffee growers from Heredia, with the advice of representatives of the National Bank, make up the Central Committee for the Organization of a Coffee Growers Cooperative, and after hard work of conviction, on April 9, 1961, with two hundred and sixty-seven associates, holds the Constitutive Assembly of the Cooperativa de Caficultores de Heredia of responsibility
Limited, in the Sala Magna del Liceo de Heredia On this date its Statutes were approved, its first manager and its Administrative Bodies were appointed.
This new organization should be given a name and in one of the first sessions of the Board of Directors its Vice President, Mr. Luis Omar Chavarría proposed:
"This Company was born as a protest of the small coffee growers, who in turn saw in the union of their efforts, the opportunity to be free to manage their small businesses as they please and once and for all, not to be never again subject to the whims of the wealthy, I propose that our Cooperative be named COOPE LIBERTAD RL ” The reasoning implicit in the previous proposal essentially summarized the feelings of the small coffee growers and their desire to have their own organization. The name was unanimously accepted. On May 8, 1961, the Department of Social Organizations of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, under resolution C-zero zero thirty-six, gave legal existence to the Cooperativa de Caficultores de Heredia, Libertad R.L. Today more than five decades after its founding, Coopeliberty continues to be the Cooperative of most coffee producers in the Heredia Province. Its name, backed by the quality of its product, is recognized by the most important trading companies in the national and international market, This is how part of a story that still continues was written.
